BES data updates

The British Election Study Team
21/01/2015

The BES team is releasing updated versions of the panel (v1.2), wave 1 (v3.4), wave 2 (v2.4) and wave 3 (v1.2) datasets.

This is a minor update that makes a number of small improvements and fixes some errors.

The updated datasets are replacing the previous versions on the website.

Old versions are available on request.

Changes listed below.

  • Greens redistribution placement wave 2 and wave 3 has corrected values
  • Unused value labels have been removed throughout
  • Variable labels have been improved throughout
  • A bug was found in the recoding of NS-SEC to NS-SEC analytic. Previously 921 respondents who were “Higher managerial and administrative occupations” were given a missing value for NS-SEC analytic. They now have the correct value.
  • The background variable of work type has been added to the survey (based on YouGov’s profile data). It is complete for all but 5400 respondents who have taken any wave of the BES.

Finally, we have updated the NS-SEC and NS-SEC analytic variables with value labels. NS-SEC variables have names such as “L7.1 Intermediate clerical and administrative occupations”. The underlying data is represented as the category number multiplied  by 10 (because statistical software cannot label non-integer values). The label definition command in stata is shown below:
